Welcome to Senator Ralph Smith's web page.  This is an excellent resource to learn more about Ralph, his philosophy, his positions on the issues, and his commitment to SERVE the people of the 22nd Senatorial District of Virginia.  Please step inside and take a look.....

Our Mission

"The majority of our State Senators took a pledge to exercise fiscal responsibility and budgetary restraint.  Many have rejected those principles.  I never have and I never will."            --  Ralph Smith

Ralph is committed to stopping wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars.  His oversight and fiscal leadership will help Virginia pay for critical government services without raising your taxes.

Ralph's allegiance is to Virginia's working families--not to the lobbyists who haunt the halls of the state capitol.  Every decision he makes will be made based on what is best for our citizens, not for the benefit of special interests.

Ralph's Bio

Ralph was born in Roanoke in 1942.  He grew up attending Huntington Court United Methodist Church where his mother taught Sunday school.  After attending public school in Roanoke, Ralph graduated Nashville Auto Diesel College in Tennessee.  He also served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve.

In 1966, Ralph opened his first business in Roanoke, a service station and auto repair shop.  Capitalizing on the boom in recreational vehicles, he later added a trailer hitch operation.  In the 1970's Ralph responded to the energy crisis by adding a retail bicycle shop that quickly developed into a four-state wholesale distribution unit.  In 1977, he designed, built, and marketed the Mountaineer wood burning stove in a six-state area.

Since 1986, Ralph has been an active member of First Baptist Church in Roanoke.  Ralph was elected mayor of the city of Roanoke in 2000.

Ralph's business, Ralph Smith, Inc., continued to manufacture trailer hitches, trailer parts, and steel products until he retired from the business in 2006.  Since then, Ralph continues to devote full time to public service.

From his beginnings as an auto mechanic, to successful businessman, to becoming mayor of his hometown, to now being senator, Ralph Smith has lived the American dream.
